Unitel Voice for Service Businesses: A Phone Setup Checklist
A business phone system should make you easier to reach without forcing you to answer during every job. Unitel Voice is one option to evaluate for keeping work calls organized separately from personal calls.
Decide what callers should experience
Unitel Voice documents business numbers, call forwarding, voicemail, and mobile apps. Your first decision is simpler: where should a customer reach you during working hours, and what should happen when you cannot answer?
Write a short greeting naming the business, the information you need, and an honest response window. A pressure-washing contractor should not promise an immediate answer while operating equipment. Avoid long menus if one person handles every inquiry.
Test the number before publishing it
Use a second phone to call the proposed business number. Test during business hours and outside them. Leave a message, check how notifications arrive, and return the call. Confirm which caller ID the customer sees.
Repeat from a weaker-coverage location you actually visit. A demonstration in your home office does not establish how an app will work on every job site. Check the vendor’s current device requirements and connectivity guidance.
Choose a routing plan you can maintain
Write down who receives each call and who follows up on missed calls. If a helper covers lunch, agree on the handoff and record enough detail to avoid calling the customer twice.
Before moving an existing number, confirm portability, account ownership details, and the transition process with the provider. Keep your existing service active until the transfer has been confirmed and tested. Do not advertise a replacement number prematurely.
Review costs and boundaries
Check the actual plan’s users, numbers, calling allowances, and any features or charges relevant to your business. Not every advertised capability is necessarily included on the lowest-priced plan.
A separate number helps establish work boundaries, but it does not create a response process automatically. Schedule a daily missed-call review and make sure customers can leave useful messages when you are unavailable.
